Rationale for Kupper Fund Request
I am requesting 2 Apple laptop computers for my students to use throughout the year. Mac has programs that PC does not have and I would like to utilize those programs with my students. Last year I began a Garage Band project with the kids that they loved! I had to use my own personal mac and a mac belonging to the EBD department.
Through the use of the programs on these macs, students will grow musically in a number of ways. Students will learn how to compose music. They can do this through a Finale music writing program and with Garage Band. Composition is one of the state standards that I am required to teach and through the use of the mac’s, students will have an exciting learning opportunity given to them.
Students will also be able to take what they learn while composing on a mac to other aspects of music. They will begin to transfer their learning to the music we are playing in class. They’ll understand what it is like to arrange and compose music and really be able to dive deep into their learning to increase their understanding of music.
I hope you will help the students to continue to grow musically and consider purchasing 2 mac computers. If the funds do not allow for 2, 1 would be sufficient.

I went to training yesterday for the updated version of Kurzweil that the district is receiving this year. It was my first exposure using the program myself and I had lightbulbs going off like crazy for changing the way our kids read and write in the classrooms. It is going to be web-based that students will be able to access from home too. The downfall is that Dawn Matte purchased the program with special education funds and it is limited to use by students identified and having an IEP. We all know there are so many kids that don’t receive services from special ed that could use some extra help and/or accommodations to succeed. I know it’s an expensive program, but I was thinking maybe there was a way we could look into using some money at Washington to open doors for all students to access the program versus just special ed kiddos…? One thing I have been considering for awhile is having the students be able to use a computer to record time and temperature and then having the computer graph it and then being able to print it out? Any thoughts on what might work for that? I will do some research. I want something low maintenance. It would need to connect to a printer in my room I think to be manageable. All that may cost too much. Thoughts, ideas?

A Digital Compound Microscope.
The Swift M10LB-S and Swift M10LB-P digital binocular microscopes offer a 5 mega pixel integrated digital camera with a 3" LCD screen. Images and video files can be captured directly onto an SD card without the need for a computer. The LCD screen allows easy viewing of specimen and materials between lab partners sharing the microscope. The USB allows direct connection to the computer and RCA allows you to connect with existing technology such as an LCD projector.
Rational: Students struggle with the mechanics of seeing a variety of objects/organisms through our microscopes. Having digital capability would allow us to project microscope images for the class to see. Students would then know what exactly they are looking for. It also allows the teacher to display a live microscope view for class observation and discussion - the whole class can observe the same view at the same time. A nice feature of this scope is the 100X objective lens that gives us more than twice the magnification power of our current scopes. Concepts like molecular "Brownian Motion" in milk fat would really come to life.
